MIDLAND - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell to Northwood University by a score of 7-2 in a battle of GLIAC opponents. The match was moved to the Midland Community Tennis Center to be played indoors. It was also Senior Day for SVSU, as the program honored Meghan Woody prior to play against the Timberwolves.
Northwood led by a 3-0 score after doubles play, with Erin Doud and Abigail Shonk putting up a good fight in an 8-5 defeat.
The two victories for Saginaw Valley came at the #1 and #4 singles position. Izabella Ismailova defeated her opponent, as she claimed the first set 6-4 and was leading the second 3-1 before her opponent retired due to injury. Shea Donahue was the other winner, as she won 6-2 and was also leading 2-1 before her opponent dropped out due to injury as well.
"This was a great showing for our team against a very strong Northwood team," said Head Coach Jenn Boehm. "I think we learned what we need to work on to compete better the next time around. We also recognized senior Meghan Woody for a tremendous four years at SVSU. We are still in the hunt for a postseason spot."
The loss drops SVSU to 4-7 overall and keeps the Cards in the fight for a postseason slot. The team travels to play Wayne State Sunday (10/19) in a match that is set to begin at noon in Detroit.
