UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball freshman forward Emily Wendling (Flushing, Mich.) has been selected as the 2012-13 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 'Freshman of the Year' after an impressive season asserting herself as one of the top forwards in the region. Wendling was also the only underclassmen chosen as a member of the exclusive All-GLIAC First Team.

Emily Wendling becomes just the second Cardinal in school history to receive the 'Freshman of the Year' distinction since they began awards in 1991. Former SVSU student-athlete Karen Deurloo earned the award back in the 1997-98 season with 13.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest.

Emily averaged 15.5 points (seventh GLIAC) in the regular season, the third highest points per game average amongst freshman in Division II. Wendling's 15.5 points per game are also the most by any SVSU freshman since 1982 - the first year available on the NCAA historical archives for women's basketball.

Wendling posted double-digit rebounds in 11 games, while recording 10 double-doubles, fourth most of any freshman in the nation. She finished fifth in the GLIAC during the regular season and 17th in the nation in field goal percentage (53.8) to lead all freshmen in the country.

She was also seventh in the conference in rebounds pulling down 8.3 rebounds per contest. Her 80.5 percent free throw shooting also made her the sixth best freshman nationally amongst freshmen.

Wendling was been dominant all season long helping the Lady Cardinals finish the regular season at the .500 mark or better overall for the first time since 2003-04 season and the first time in the conference since 1998-99. Saginaw Valley clinched a spot in the GLIAC Tournament for this first time since the 2006-2007 season.
