University Center, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team tied Tiffin Universtiy, 1-1 in a pivotal Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Friday afternoon (Nov. 1).
The scoring started early on in the contest, as Tiffin was awarded a free kick just 20 yards away from goal. Andre Carvalho-Landel capitalized on the kick by striking the ball just over top of SVSU's six-man wall for the goal. The score came at the 6:57 mark.
Saginaw Valley struck in the 26th minute on a Tyler Channell laser that sailed past the Tiffin goalkeeper off a feed from Morley Burns to tie the game at one goal-apiece.
The squads went in to halftime with the score knotted at 1-1.
The second half saw a few quality opportunitites, but neither team could manage to put a ball in the back of the net. Saginaw Valley out-shot the Dragons 12-5 in the second half and each team earned just a single corner kick.
The score would remain tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Saginaw Valley turned up the pressure in the overtime periods, but could not capitalize. The best goal scoring opportunity came from a Michael Lamb shot that was poked by Lachlan Savage just wide of the goal. The home team outshot Tiffin 6-5 in the overtime periods.
Aaron Gerwig was a rock in net all day. He recorded five key saves in the match.
SVSU concluded the regular season with a record of 9-3-5 and 8-2-4 in the GLIAC while the tie gives Tiffin a 10-2-3 overall record and 8-2-3 mark in the conference.
The Cardinals now wait for the season finales to conclude around the league to determine its seeding in the GLIAC Tournament that begins Tuesday (Nov. 5).
