Lady Cardinals Sneak Past Panthers, 5-4

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team pulled out a close 5-4 victory today (Sept. 16), defeating Ohio Dominican in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.

The Cardinals were able to pick up a doubles win today with the team of Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) taking down their opponents 8-2 in No. 2 doubles.

Saginaw Valley also faired well in singles, with the match clinching point coming from Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) in No. 1 singles when she defeated Samanta Zambrano in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Woody and Doud were both able to grab wins in singles action as well, Woody winning her No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-3, and Doud taking her No. 5 singles match, 6-4, 6-0. Also helping with the Cardinal effort was Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS), who won her No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-1.

With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 5-1 overall and in the GLIAC while Ohio Dominican falls to 3-2 overall and in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action this Friday (Sept. 21) to compete in the ITA regional tournament played at Jenison High School.
