UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Basketball team has announced its 2012 recruiting class, which is compiled of players who will be the foundation of Cardinal Women's Basketball for years to come.
"We are extremely excited to announce that we have signed six players to the class of 2012. These six bring an unbelievable work ethic and passion for the game of basketball. Each of them brings that same dedication and commitment to the classroom and to every aspect of their life. As a class, they are versatile and highly skilled, but it is all of their intangibles that we love best about them. There is no limit to the impact they can have on this program as we begin to turn things around. "

2012 SVSU Women's Basketball Recruiting Class
Mikayla Silm – 5'8, St. Johns H.S., St. Johns, MI
"Mikayla has all the attributes you want in a recruit. She is a talented guard that works hard, puts her teammates first and commits to getting better every day. It is her work ethic that is going to allow her to reach her full potential and be a key member of every team she plays on." - Coach Pewinski
Mikayala prepped at St. Johns High School where she captained the conference champion basketball team and has earned all-conference honors last season. Silm is a member of the National Honor Society and is the Student Council Vice President. She plans on majoring in Occupational Therapy at SVSU.
Alex Green - 5'5, East Lansing H.S., East Lansing, MI
"Alex was born to be a leader and as a point guard, she embraces that role. She is the ultimate competitor and is tough as nails. While she will be an excellent player in this conference, her best attributes have nothing to do with her basketball skills." - Coach Pewinski
Alex prepped at East Lansing High School where she has set a school record as captain of her basketball team for highest three-point percentage in a season at 56 percent. Green is a member of the National Honor Society and an all-area scholar athlete. Alex plans on majoring in pre-medicine at Saginaw Valley.
Emily Wendling - 6'3, Flushing H.S., Flushing, MI
"Emily is the only post player in this recruiting class, but we felt that she was one of the best ones out there. She is highly skilled and will be able to step out to the perimeter if necessary. Each time we saw her play, she continued to improve some aspect of her game, and that is a tribute to her dedication and drive to be a great player." - Coach Pewinski
Wendling prepped at Flushing High School where she was first team all-conference and honorable mention All-State her junior season in basketball. She was selected basketball team captain her junior season and is a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the All-A Honor Roll every year. Emily is currently undecided on a major at SVSU.
Paige Wright - 5'10, Northrop H.S., Ft. Wayne, IN
"Paige is a long, lefty that has played every position from point guard to post in high school. She is a natural 3, but with her length, could play some 4 for us. That versatility and her ability to shoot the ball are what will make her a great player in this conference." - Coach Pewinski
Wright prepped at Northrop High School where she has captained the basketball team since her sophomore season. Emily has started on the varsity squad since her freshman year and has led her team in assists each of her three seasons. Wright is currently undecided on a field of study at Saginaw Valley.
Danielle Carriere - 5'9, John Paul II, London, Ontario, Canada
"Danielle is the true scorer of the group. She has a scorer's mentality and is aggressive at all times. Danielle will play a lot of 2 or 3, but could slide to the point guard spot if we needed. She is fearless going to the basket and is a very good rebounder from the guard spot." - Coach Pewinski
Danielle prepped at John Paul II Catholic Secondary School where she has received five varsity letters in basketball and captained the team the past three seasons. She guided John Paul II to the OFSAA 4A championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010 and was selected as a member of the 2011 All-Canada Classic which showcases the most elite players in Canada. Carriere is a recipient of the 2010 Fran Wigston Award (TVRAA most outstanding player of the year). Danielle is an honor roll member and currently undecided on a major at SVSU.
Katelyn Carriere - 5'8, John Paul II, London, Ontario, Canada
"Katelyn is an excellent point guard, but is capable of playing some 2 or 3. She handles the ball extremely well and with her height and speed, she is very good at getting in the paint to finish or find the open player. It is her court awareness and ability to control tempo that are the most impressive." - Coach Pewinski
Katelyn prepped at John Paul II Catholic Secondary School where she has received four varsity letters in basketball. Carriere was selected as a member of the 2011 All-Canada Classic and nominated for the 2011 Fran Wigston Award (TVRAA most outstanding player of the year). Katelyn captained John Paul II 2008-2010 to the WOSSA Championship. Carriere is an honor roll member and currently undecided on a field of study at Saginaw Valley.
