Cardinals Fall to Screaming Eagles, 76-62

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley women's basketball team fell to Southern Indiana University Saturday (Nov. 12), 76-62. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 0-1 overall on the season, while the Screaming Eagles improve to 1-0 with the win.

The Cardinals fell behind early in the contest, but would cut the deficit to just two points at 26-24 with 6:24 to go in the first half when Meijer "Player of the Game" Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) knocked down a free throw. Womack finished the evening with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead SVSU. Southern Indiana would go on a 17-7 run to end the half and enter the locker room with a 43-31 advantage.

Saginaw Valley would battle back and come within eight points of the Screaming Eagles with a little under 10 minutes to play in the second half when junior Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich. /Powers Catholic HS) hit a jump shot on an a pass from Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) to make the score 57-49. Herzog finished the evening with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Greene notched eight points and pulled down five boards, four of which came off the offensive glass.

The Cardinals tried battle back in the second half but the Screaming Eagles shot just under 45 percent from the field and took the 76-62 victory.

Junior forward Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich.) finished the night with nine points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Jasmine Woods (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) finished with 11 points in the season opener. Saginaw Valley outrebounded Southern Indiana by a 48-43 margin, while the Cardinals also came out on top in the points in the paint battle, 24-17.

The Cardinals will attempt to pick up their first win of the 2011-12 season on Saturday (Nov. 19) when they travel to Wisconsin-Parkside, tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
