TIFFIN, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State
University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to
Tiffin University today (April 2) 9-8 and 9-3 in a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.
Game
One
The Cardinals jumped out to a four run lead in the first inning
as Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich.) scored on a Tiffin error. Ryan
Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) stepped up to
the plate, lining out to third base, scoring Kevin Dore
(Kawkawlin, Mich. / Bay City Western HS). A homerun off the
bat of Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) would score two runs
before the end of the top of the first inning. The dragons
would respond with one run in the bottom of the first.
Saginaw Valley had a strong third inning as they scored three
runs as Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich. / Powers Catholic HS) scored
on a Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek HS) RBI
just before Thomas advanced to home on a Tiffin error.
Peterson would score the third run of the inning on a Chase
Coulter (Clio, Mich. / Powers Catholic HS) sacrifice groundout
to the pitcher. The Dragons added their second run of
the game in the bottom of the third to make the score 7-2.
The final run for the Cardinals was scored in the fourth inning,
as Dore would advance home on a Thomas fly-out to left field.
The Dragons would score three runs in the bottom of the fourth and
four in the bottom of the fifth inning to clinch the victory, 9-8.
Saginaw Valley was lead overall by Thomas who ended the first
game with three hits on four plate appearances and posted three
RBIs on the afternoon. Webber and Dore both finished with two
runs on four at bats and had one RBI.
Game
Two
Saginaw Valley scored their first run of the game in the first
inning, as Dore would reach home on a single off the bat of
Webber. Tiffin took a 5-1 lead by the bottom of the fifth
inning before the Cardinals would post two runs in the sixth inning
as Peterson picked up an RBI, flying out to center field, advancing
Webber to home. Thomas would score the third and final run
for Saginaw Valley on a fly out up the middle off the bat of Mike
VanAlst (Clio, Mich.).
The Dragons would go on to the bottom of the sixth inning,
scoring four runs and taking the doubleheader sweep win, 9-3.
The Cardinals were led overall by Webber and O'Boyle who
both tallied two hits on the afternoon, while Webber, Peterson and
VanAlst picked up one RBI each.
Saginaw Valley will return to action tomorrow (April 3) in a
nine-inning match-up against Tiffin; Game time is scheduled for
12:00 PM.
