UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University baseball team swept a doubleheader Saturday (Apr.
17) over the visiting Hillsdale College Chargers, 15-6 and
6-3. The two victories put the Cardinals at 15-16 overall on
the season and 11-10 in the GLIAC while the Chargers fall to 8-26
overall and 5-18 in league play.
Game One
The Cardinals trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third
inning, but would respond with seven runs in that frame to take a
7-5 lead from the Chargers. SVSU would put up a five-spot in
its half of the fifth to make the count 12-5 in its
advantage.
The Chargers scored a single run in the top of six, but Saginaw
would respond, adding three more runs in the bottom half and
close-out for the 15-6 victory.
Ryan Ermers (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) and Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) each had three hits in
the opener, including three doubles and four RBIs for Ermers and a
double and three RBIs for Peterson. Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin,
Mich./Muskegon CC) and Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek
HS) each added two hits, as the Cardinals out-hit Hillsdale,
15-4.
Craig Engerer (Freeland, Mich.) got his first-career victory on
the mound, working four innings of relief and allowing only one run
while striking-out three Chargers.
Game Two
Hillsdale would take the lead on a first inning solo home
run. SVSU would respond with a pair of runs in the third,
claiming a 2-1 lead. The Chargers would jump back out front
in the next half inning, plating two runs to lead 3-2. The
Cards tied things up in the bottom of four, knotting the game at
three runs apiece.
The Cardinals would add two more in the fifth and a run in the
bottom of six for the 6-3 victory.
Dore went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had a pair of hits
with an RBI. Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) and Matt Hunt
(Howell, Mich./Concordia University) both had two hits and two RBIs
in the nightcap.
Scott Haase (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) went the
distance for the win, improving to 4-1 on the season. Haase
scattered six hits and struck-out eight Hillsdale batters while
only walking two.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow for a single nine
inning contest, with first pitch slated for noon.
