AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State
University baseball team posted a split with the Assumption College
Greyhounds (3-1) on Saturday night (Mar. 6). The Cardinals
(1-3) got a win in the first game, downing Assumption by a score of
11-4 before dropping an 11-10 decision in the nightcap.
SVSU would jump ahead in the top of the second inning, 1-0 on a
solo home run by senior Charlie Thomas
(Northville, Mich.). The Cardinals would get another two runs
in the third, as senior Josh Peterson
(Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) doubled-in both senior Ryan Webber (Clio,
Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and sophomore Matt Hunt (Howell,
Mich./Concordia University) to make the count 3-0. The
Greyhounds would respond with a pair of runs of their own to cut
the lead to 3-2. Saginaw would strike again in the fifth with
a three-run home run by freshman Kyle O'Boyle (Midland,
Mich./Bullock Creek HS), which plated Peterson and Webber to make
the score 6-2. Assumption would get another pair of runs in
the bottom of the fifth, but five more Cardinal runs in the top of
the sixth helped Saginaw close-out the 11-4 victory.
Senior Kevin
Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Muskegon CC) was 3-for-4 in the
opener. Peterson and senior Chase Coulter (Clio,
Mich./Powers Catholic HS) were each 2-for-3 with a double and three
RBI. O'Boyle was also 2-for-3 in the contest, knocking-in
four runs. Junior Garrett Grundman
(Croswell, Mich./Graceland University) got the win on the hill,
while freshman Justin Drzewicki
(Bay City, Mich./Central HS) recorded the save.
Assumption jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first
in game two. The Cardinals would respond, however, as Webber
hit a three run shot over the left field fence, scoring sophomore
Mike VanAlst
(Clio, Mich.) and sophomore Ryan Ermers (Sterling
Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS). Assumption went up 5-3
after their half of the second, but Saginaw put up six in the
bottom of the second to take a 9-5 advantage. The Greyhounds
would score three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively
to take an 11-9 advantage. The Cardinals would get one more
on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Ermers singled and
scored Dore, who reached base on a triple. An SVSU attempt in
the bottom of the seventh fell short, though, as Assumption was
able to close-out for the 11-10 victory.
Ermers went 4-for-4 in the nightcap, including a triple and four
RBI. Dore was 2-for-4 with a triple and Thomas was also
2-for-4, including a double. Webber, O'Boyle, Coulter,
Peterson and sophomore Jason Potts (Hartland, Mich.) each had hits
for Saginaw, with Webber having three RBI.
SVSU returns to action Sunday (Mar. 7) when it plays
Wheeling-Jesuit (W.Va.) in a doubleheader slated to start at 9:30
am.
