BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State
University freshman guard Chris Webb (Saginaw,
Mich./Arthur Hill HS) has been selected the 2009-10 GLIAC Men's
Basketball "Freshman of the Year" by the league's coaches in
conjuction with all-conference balloting. Frankie Smith was voted as
the GLIAC "Coach of the Year".
Two other Cardinals also earned All-GLIAC recognition, as senior
guard Avery
Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) and junior forward Keithan Jackson
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights HS) were voted to the All-GLIAC
First and Second Teams, respectively.
Webb finished fourth among Cardinals in scoring (10.4 ppg), lead
the team in three point percentage (.423) and was second on the
team in steals (1.32 spg), while shooting .405 percent from the
floor in his rookie campaign. He was second on the team in minutes
played with 33.5 per contest while starting 27 of SVSU's 28
games. Webb ranks fifth in the GLIAC in three-point percentage,
ninth in minutes played and was regarded as one of the
Cardinals' best on the ball defenders during the 2009-10
campaign. Webb recorded a career-high 23 points at Tiffin
University on Feb. 13, 2010.
Smith lead the Cardinals to a 13-9 record in regular season
conference play this season, marking the first time in which SVSU
qualified for postseason play since the 1998-99 campaign. Overall,
Smith has posted a career record of 36-43 during his three-year
tenure with Saginaw Valley, guiding the Cardinals to their first
16-win season since the 1997-98 season. SVSU's six-game
winning streak in the middle of the season was its longest since
the 1984-85 season, when
it rattled-off 12 straight victories.
Stephenson lands on the All-GLIAC First Team after being named
to the Second Team in the 2008-09 season. Hed led SVSU this
season in scoring with 16.4 ppg and was second on the squad in
rebounding, grabbing 5.8 boards per contest. Stephenson was
second on the team in blocks (16) and third in steals (28) while
playing in a team-high 34.0 minutes per game.
Jackson earns Second Team honors after leading the league in
rebounding, grabbing 9.7 per game. Keithan was also third on
the team in scoring for the 2009-10 campaign, averaging 12.5 points
per game.
