Cardinals Fall Twice to Timberwolves

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader today (April 15) to Northwood University, 3-0, and 6-4 in eight innings.

GAME 1
In the afternoon's opener at the SVSU Athletic Complex, the Cardinals were shut-out by the visiting Timberwolves. Saginaw Valley was, however, able to get five hits in the game. Two of those hits came off freshman designated-hitter Mike VanAlst (Clio, Mich.) who went 2-2 with two singles before coming out of the game in the fifth inning. The rest of the Cardinal offense had a hard time finding a grove against Northwood's pitching.

GAME 2
In the second game, neither team scored until Saginaw Valley put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Leading off the inning, junior Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) drove a single to right field, followed by a bunt single off junior Josh Peterson's (Midland, Mich.) bat. Freshman Jason Potts (Hartland, Mich.) drew a one-out walk, followed a two-RBI double to left field from sophomore Dustin Mayner (Gaines, Mich.), putting runners on second and third for junior Kevin Dore (Bay City, Mich.) to hit a single and advance to second base on an error by Northwood's third baseman, while Mayner and Potts scored, putting the Cardinals up 4-0.

Northwood would turn around in the top of the fifth to put four runs of their own on the board, knotting the score, 4-4.

That score would stand until the top of the eighth inning, when the Timberwolves would add two more runs to close out the game's scoring.

For the Cardinals, Dore went 3-4, with one RBI, and Thomas hit 2-4 and scored a run.

The losses drop SVSU's record to 12-22-1 overall and 8-13-1 in the GLIAC, while Northwood moves to 18-15 overall and 12-10 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will hit the road for the next 10 games, the first of which is Saturday (April 18) when the Cardinals will take on Hillsdale in doubleheader action, followed by a single-nine inning contest against the Chargers. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
