UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University women's basketball team dropped its GLIAC opener
to the University of Findlay, 69-61. The loss drops the Lady
Cardinals' record to 2-3 overall while the Oilers move to 5-0.
Findlay jumped to a 7-0 start before SVSU would get on the board
thanks to a pair of free throws from junior guard Kelley Wesp
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS). The Oilers would lead by as
much as 14 in the opening half, but carried an 11 point lead into
halftime. SVSU would climb back, cutting the lead to three
points at the 9:42 mark, when Findlay led, 52-49. That would
be as close as SVSU would get in the closing half, as the Oilers
would close out the contest with the eight-point victory.
Freshman forward Jasmine Kennedy
(Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) led the Cardinals with
11 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the contest and added five
rebounds. Junior guards Tasha Balls
(Bridgeport, Mich./Buena Vista HS) and Wesp each added 10 points in
the game. Freshman Grace Herzog (Linden,
Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had a team-high six rebounds to go along
with seven points. Freshman guard Aysha Boston (Detroit,
Mich./Renaissance HS) added nine points.
SVSU continues GLIAC play with another home contest on Saturday
(Dec. 5) against Hillsdale College. Hillsdale (1-4) claimed
its first victory of the 2009-10 season Thursday (Dec. 3) with a
75-74 victory over Lake Superior State University. Tip-off
for Saturday's game is set for 5:00 pm.
