INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State
University volleyball team won its opening match of the 2009
Midwest Regional Tournament against Grand Valley State University,
3-1. The Lakers took the first set by a 25-21 score before
SVSU would answer, taking the next three by scores of 25-15, 25-20,
and 25-18, respectively.
Senior Jaclyn Carnago
(St. Clair, Mich) recorded 14 kills on the afternoon for the
Cardinals while hitting .385 and adding three aces. Senior Kait Harris
(Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) had 39 assists versus GVSU as well as
16 digs and two blocks. Sophomores Laura Ward (White
Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) and Annie Buxton
(Aurora, Ont.) had 22 digs and 15 digs, respectively for Saginaw,
as the Cardinals held the Lakers to a .013 hitting
percentage. Junior Jessica Treiber
(Sebewaing, Mich./USA HS) had eight kills in the match while senior
Allison
Schlinkert (Marysville, Mich.), sophomore Katie Fitzgerald
(Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) and Buxton each had seven.
With the win, Saginaw advances its record to 22-9 on the season
while Grand Valley's season ends with a 16-13 record, SVSU
now advances to the Regional semifinals, where it will face Lewis
University. The semifinal match is set for tomorrow at 5:00
pm.
