HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley
State men's basketball team's first leg of its Up North
trip this week was successful as the Cardinals defeated GLIAC foe
Michigan Tech, 85-73 tonight (Jan. 22).
The Cardinals rode the back of freshman point guard Greg Foster
(Indianapolis, Ind./T.C. Howe) who scored 26 of SVSU's 40
points in the first half on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor and
4-of-4 from behind the three point line. Foster would finish with a
career high 30 points and ten rebounds for the game.
Senior guard Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich./East Tenn. State
University) netted 22 points on six-of-eight shooting from the
floor, including hitting four-for-seven from behind the arch.
Senior forward Adam Gries (Fremont, Ohio/Ross HS) knocked down 17
points to round out the Cardinals' top scorers.
The Cardinals took a two-point lead into the locker room, 40-38,
by going 6-for-10 from behind the three-point line for the
half.
But, as Foster cooled down, Williams heated up by adding 16 points
for the Cardinals in the second half. As a team, the Cardinals shot
better than 50 percent from the floor on 28-of-55 shooting.
With the win SVSU moves to 4-11 overall and 4-7 in the GLIAC and
has now beaten Michigan Tech three times in their last five visits
to Houghton. Michigan Tech falls to 9-7 overall and 6-7 in the
GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 24)
when they take on Northern Michigan at 1:00 pm in Marquette.
