Todd Stepsis enters his sixth season as defensive coordinatorand defensive backs coach at Saginaw Valley State University.
Since Stepsis arrived on campus, the SVSU defense has producednumerous All-Conference selections and three professional footballplayers (Matthew Black currently a defensive back with the TorontoArgonauts, Rob Calloway, a defensive tackle with the Dallas Cowboysand Jeff Heath, a defensive back with the DallasCowboys).
In 2012, the Cardinals were led by 1st Team All-GLIAC membersJeff Heath and Grant Caserta. Heath signed an undrafted freeagent contract with the Dallas Cowboys following the 2013 NFLDraft, while Caserta was also awarded with Capital One All-Americaaccoladed following his senior season. The defense alsofeatured the third-best third down defense in the conference.
In 2009, the SVSU defense was solid, ranking near the top of theGLIAC in every statistical category. In addition to fiveAll-GLIAC first and second team selections, senior linebacker JohnJacobs was named the conference defensive back of the year andfirst team AFCA All-American. Stepsis had a very impressive2008 season as the Cardinals defensive coordinator. The Cardinaldefense was ranked third in total defense in the GLIAC and producedthree All-GLIAC defensive team members (two first team and onesecond team).
In the previous seven seasons, Stepsis coached the defensivesecondary under current Cardinal Head Coach Jim Collins at CapitalUniversity. During that time, the aggressive Crusader defenseproduced a national player of the year, numerous All-Americans, andnational rankings in several statistical categories. Since2001, there have been 21 all-conference and 3 All-Americandefensive backs. Along with his coaching duties, Stepsis wasalso an assistant athletic director and adjunct faculty for thehealth and sports sciences department.
Prior to arriving at Capital University, Stepsis served a two-year stint as the defensive backs coach at Otterbein college andplayed four seasons of football at Ashland University, abachelor’s degree in education and later a master’sdegree in education.
Stepsis and his wife Angie and daughter Addison live inSaginaw. His daughter Zoe and son Zander reside in Columbus,Ohio.
