Matt Whitton was added the Cardinal Football staff in the Spring of 2026 and will work with the nickels. He spent last season with Tiffin University as an assistant defensive coach. While with the Dragons, Whitton coached two first team All-GMAC players in Malik Baker and Jacob Tueimeh. Tueimeh finished the season third in D2 in solo tackles with 68 (103 total tackles).
“Coach Whitton is a coach I’ve had the opportunity to work with and compete against, and I’ve seen his growth and development firsthand. We coached together at the University of Indianapolis, and I also had the chance to coach against him when he was at McKendree University. He does a great job connecting with players and building trust within his position group. He takes great pride in teaching the details of the game and brings toughness, integrity, and a strong work ethic to everything he does. He will help our players grow both on the field and as young men,” said Head Coach Michael Engle.
Before joining Tiffin, he was the cornerbacks coach at McKendree University for the 2024 season. With the Bearcats, Whitton coached another all-conference DB in Keshawn Lyons. The McKendree defense ranked in the top 20 in interceptions that season, and Lyons was just outside the top 10 in pass breakups.
