NEW ORLEANS – Regional Athletes and Coaches of the year for the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country season were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday following Regional Championship Weekend, as voted by Division Two member coaches.
Head coach Rod Cowan was named the Midwest Men's Coach of the Year in his ninth year with the program. Cowan saw his men's team finish runner up at the Midwest Regionals, advancing to the NCAA. It was the best finish for the Cardinals since 2009 and a four-spot improvement over last season's sixth-place finish.
Nate Frasier, Tom Goforth and Austen Mandernach, each earned All-Region accolades from the men's side. This is Frasier's second time earning an All-Region accolade. These three individuals led the Cardinals to second place at the Midwest Regionals. All three recorded a Top 25 finish at the meet.
Dorr finished as the only SVSU female on the All-Region team after earning a ninth place overall with a time of 21:54.62 at the regional meet. This is Dorr's second time recieving the All-Region cross country accolade. She will head to the NCAA Championship as an individual qualifier, as well.
The men's team along with Dorr will travel to the NCAA championships Dec. 1 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at Bob O'Conner Golf Course at Schenley Park. Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and SportsPITTSBURGH will serve as hosts. The men's race will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern, followed by the women's race at 12:15 p.m. Eastern.
