Cardinal Fall to Lake Erie to Conclude Midwest Regional Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team wrapped up play at the Midwest Regional Crossover with a 3–1 loss to Lake Erie College on Saturday morning. The Cardinals (7-13) fell to the Storm (8-12) by set scores of 18-25, 22-25, 25-18, and 12-25.

Rachel Townsend (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS) led SVSU with 12 kills and eight digs. Trista Ameel (Casco, Mich. / Romeo HS) posted a career-high 11 digs to pace the defense. Finley Helm (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Mount Pleasant HS) and Marissa Roe (Valparaiso, Ind. / Chesterton HS) each tallied eight kills, with Helm adding five digs and two assists. Roe recorded six total blocks, including two solos. Jackie Scheiber (Wyandotte, Mich. / Riverview Community HS) ran the offense with 43 assists while contributing six digs and an ace.

Set One (18–25)

Lake Erie opened with a 7–3 lead before SVSU rallied to briefly pull ahead following a kill and ace from Helm. The Storm responded with a 6–1 run to regain control and never trailed again. Despite late kills from Townsend and Helm, Lake Erie closed on an 8–2 surge to take the first set.

Set Two (22–25)

SVSU started strong behind three Lake Erie attack errors and a block by Ava Decker (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart HS). The Storm countered with a 6–1 run to go ahead 11–7. Decker and Cola Sisk (Lake Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton HS) added kills to keep the Cardinals close, but despite narrowing the deficit to one point four times, SVSU couldn't complete the comeback as Lake Erie went up 2–0.

Set Three (25–18)

The Cardinals responded with energy in the third set, jumping out to a 4–1 lead behind a block from Sisk and Roe and a kill from Roe. SVSU extended the margin with an 8–3 run highlighted by back-to-back kills from Decker. After Lake Erie cut it to 16–15, SVSU closed on a 9–3 run, sealing the set on an ace from Scheiber.

Set Four (12–25)

The final set began evenly at 5–5 before the Storm seized control with a decisive 15–4 stretch, including a 7–0 burst to open the run. The Cardinals added a few late points but couldn't overcome the deficit as Lake Erie took the match in four sets.

Up Next: The Cardinals return to GLIAC play next weekend, traveling to Roosevelt on Friday, Oct. 24, for a 6:00 p.m. match at the Goodman Center in Chicago, Ill. SVSU continues the road trip Saturday, Oct. 25, against Parkside at 3:00 p.m. from De Simone Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
