UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team wrapped up its GLIAC home weekend on Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets to Michigan Tech at Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Cardinals (6-9, 1-5 GLIAC) were defeated by scores of 28-26, 25-19, and 25-18. Rachel Townsend (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS) led SVSU with 14 kills and added seven digs and a block assist. Chloe Vanwinkle (Clio, Mich. / Clio HS) followed with seven kills, seven digs, and a service ace, while Ava Decker (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart HS) totaled five kills, two aces, and two block assists. Kendall Ihm (Owosso, Mich. / Owosso HS) added seven kills and three block assists, and Jackie Scheiber (Wyandotte, Mich. / Riverview Community HS) dished out 31 assists with two aces and three blocks.
SVSU finished with 38 kills, six aces, 36 digs, and 7.0 total blocks while hitting .163 as a team.
Set One (26–28)
A back-and-forth opener featured 12 ties and five lead changes. The Cardinals surged ahead 10–6 behind kills from Townsend and Vanwinkle and an ace by Vanwinkle. After Tech tied it at 18–18, SVSU regained a late lead at 23–21 on a Townsend kill. However, the Huskies got a kill and an ace to take the set in extras.
Set Two (19–25)
A highly contested second set had SVSU ahead 11-8 midway after kills from Townsend and Ihm. A service ace from Scheiber took the lead back at 19–18, but Michigan Tech pulled away with a 7–0 run to finish the set.
Set Three (18–25)
The Cardinals opened with a 4–1 run capped by a Townsend kill, but Tech answered with an 8–1 stretch. SVSU rallied behind kills from Townsend, Scheiber, and Decker and two late service aces from Decker to trim the deficit to 19–15. The Huskies, however, held firm to close the match.
