Tennis Downs Pride Stay in Postseason Hunt

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team defeated Purdue Northwest 5-2 on Friday afternoon to remain in the hunt for a spot in the GLIAC Tournament next week. The Cardinals (7-9, 1-5 GLIAC) took the 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. The Pride (6-14, 1-6 GLIAC) won the number five and six singles to tie the match, but SVSU took the other four singles matchups for the victory.

Fatimah Butt (Miami, Fla.) and Lydia Liong Tng En (Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia / SMK Bintulu) won both their doubles and singles matches to lead SVSU to the win. Butt and partner Natalie Schoenherr (Vandalia, Ohio) won number two doubles 6-3 before Butt earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory at number four singles. Liong Tng En and Irene Latorre Barreiro (Barcelona, Spain / Escola Virolai) won the number three doubles 6-3 before Liong Tng En's number three singles contest went 6-4, 6-7 (14), 10-8, to give her a 2-0 showing on the afternoon.
