MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team defeated Lake Superior State University by an 8-1 score in a non-conference match at the Midland Community Tennis Center on Sunday (Mar. 16).
Meghan Woody and Erin Doud opened the scoring with an 8-3 victory at no. 1 doubles. Laurene Majani and Hannah Wittock dropped their match at no. 2 doubles 8-2. LSSU traveled only five players, so SVSU won at no. 3 doubles by forfeit.
SVSU swept the singles matches, winning two tie-breakers to do so. Izabella Ismailova rallied in her match at no. 1 singles, saving at least four match points to win 6-7, 7-5, 11-9. Doud also needed a third set tie-breaker to win her match at no. 3 singles, 6-4, 1-6, 10-4. Woody won at no. 2 singles 6-3, 6-3.
In their final matches as Cardinals, seniors Charlotte Wong and Ashley Giordano each claimed victories. At no. 4 singles, Wong won the first set 6-4; her opponent then withdrew due to injury. Giordano won at no. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
The match concludes SVSU's spring season.
