MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell to Wayne State University 5-0 today (Oct. 26) in the first round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament.
The team of Kelli Close (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) and Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) tried starting the Cardinals off strong but eventually fell in the first match of the evening 8-4 in No. 1 doubles.
Also hoping to grab a point in No. 3 doubles before losing 8-6 in a hard fought match was the duo of Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS). Close also played a tough match in No. 3 singles before losing to her opponent 7-5, 6-4.
With the loss, the Cardinals are scheduled to play Hillsdale College tomorrow (Oct. 27) at 3:45 PM as they look to advance in the GLIAC Tournament.
