Lady Cardinals Fall to Hillsdale, 5-4

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell today (Oct. 7) to Hillsdale College in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match by a score of 5-4. The Cardinals drop to 6-6 in GLIAC and overall with the loss, while Hillsdale  improves to 6-4 overall and in the GLIAC.

Saginaw Valley got off to a great start today, winning two of the three doubles matches.  In No. 1 doubles, the team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS), took their match by a score of 8-4.  Grabbing the second point of the day was No. 3 doubles duo Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS), who dominated their match, 8-1.

The Cardinals also started well in singles but were unable to finish off the Chargers despite the efforts of Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) picking up a win in No. 5 singles edging out her opponent, 7-6 6-1.  Close also went on the pick up another point for Saginaw Valley in No. 3 singles, defeating her opponent 6-1 7-5.  The match came down to sophomore Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) who fought tough in the her No. 2 singles match, after losing the first set, bounced back to win the second set 6-1. Woody ultimately fell in the third set, 7-5.

Saginaw Valley will return to action at home against Michigan Tech on Friday (Oct. 12) when they face the Huskies for a 1:00 PM match.
