University Center, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match today (Sept. 27) to Ferris State University by a score of 6-3.
The Cardinals started the day off with a win from Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS) in No. 1 doubles, defeating their opponents 8-4. The team of Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) fought hard in their No. 2 doubles match, but eventually fell short, losing 8-4.
Saginaw Valley picked up their next point at No. 3 singles where freshman Kelli Close won her match 6-0, 6-1. Also grabbing a win was Doud at No. 5 singles, taking down her Ferris opponent, 6-1 6-2. Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) and Shangguan battled hard in the final two singles matches, but both ultimately fell in three sets. Shangguan in No. 1 singles, 6-2 2-6 6-2, and Wong in No. 4 singles, 4-6 6-3 6-3.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 5-3 overall on the season and 5-3 in GLIAC, while Ferris State improves to 6-2 overall and 6-2 in GLIAC. SVSU will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 28), with a home match against Grand Valley State University scheduled to start at 2 pm.
