ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling 2–1 to No. 6 Grand Valley State at the GVSU Soccer Field.
The Cardinals (11–5–2, 9–4–1 GLIAC) needed a point on the day to claim second place in the GLIAC, but with the loss and a win for Parkside, the Rangers tied SVSU and had the heads up tiebreaker to take the number two seed.
Grand Valley opened the scoring just 6:40 into the match when Sarah Fromm scored her first of two goals on the day. She doubled the lead just over four minutes later as the Lakers stormed ahead.
Saginaw Valley responded in the 38th minute. Madi Bajis (Macomb, Mich. / Utica HS) cleaned up just outside the 6-yard box after a free kick was swung into the area. Sophia Zalucki (Washington Twp., Mich / Romeo HS) sent in the free kick and Ruby Grundner (Belle River, Ontario / Tecumseh Vista Academy) had the first touch as both earned assists on the goal.
The Cardinals generated strong second-half pressure, outshooting the Lakers 7–5 after the break while both teams had five corner kicks. Lainey Garbarz (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS) made six saves in goal, including three in each half.
