Cardinals Dominate on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style on Saturday afternoon, defeating Roosevelt University 4–1 at Robert C. Braddock Field. Eight seniors were recognized prior to kickoff including Kennedi Pugh (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt HS), Lainey Garbarz (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS), Maddie White (Bay City, Mich. / Garber HS), Madi Bajis (Macomb, Mich. / Utica HS), Kaley Douglass (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston HS), Caitlyn Berl (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oakland Catholic HS), Sophia Zalucki (Washington Twp., Mich. / Romeo HS), and Rileigh Garbarz (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS).

The Cardinals (6–3–2, 4–2–1 GLIAC) fell behind early when Roosevelt's Kenna Wisniewski scored in the eighth minute, but SVSU quickly responded and dominated the rest of the match. Douglass netted the equalizer in the 24th minute, finishing a rebound to make it 1–1 at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Cardinals. R. Garbarz put SVSU ahead 2–1 in the 61st minute with a finish off a rebound of a shot from Bajis. Bajis then tallied a goal of her own in the 82nd minute from a setup by Emily Kolodin (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc HS). Just 98 seconds later, Emma Bradley (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston HS) capped the scoring, converting on another loose ball in the box that came from R. Garbarz to make it 4–1.

SVSU dominated statistically, outshooting Roosevelt 27–8, including a 14–3 advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinals also led 9–5 in corner kicks and committed just eight fouls. L. Garbarz started in goal, making one save in the first half, while played the second half and added one save to secure the win.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley stays at home with Northern Michigan at Robert C. Braddock Field on Friday, October 17. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM before a 2:00 PM kickoff against Michigan Tech on Sunday, October 19.
