Lady Cardinals Shut Out Timberwolves, 1-0

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated Northwood University today (Oct. 19) 1-0 on the rain-soaked pitch in a matchup of two of the top programs in the GLIAC standings.

Midway through the first half of play, freshman Lexie Brisson-Fast (Ferndale, Mich.) beat the Northwood goalkeeper in the lower right hand corner of the net to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead.

The goal at the 25:47 mark was Brisson-Fast's second of the season as SVSU took the slight edge into the halftime intermission.

Saginaw Valley turned up their high pressure defense in the second half and managed to keep the Timberwolves off the scoreboard as the Cardinals took the 1-0 victory.

Kali Barry (Mason, Mich.) recorded four shots with two on goal to lead SVSU, while Kelsey Burt (Marengo, Ohio / Highland HS) also tallied two shots on net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Ivezaj (Rochester Hills, Mich.) posted her seventh shutout in net for the Cardinals this season as she stopped three shots on goal. Ivezaj lowered her goals against average to a miniscule 0.85 with two regular season matches to play.

SVSU improved to 8-2-4 overall on the season with the win and and sit in third place in the conference with a 7-1-3 record.

The Cardinals will return to action in their hunt for the postseason next Friday (Oct. 26) when they travel to Findlay to battle the Oilers at 1:00 PM.
