Cardinals Drop GLIAC Home Opener to Panthers

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision to Davenport in the GLIAC home opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals (1-8, 0-3 GLIAC) trailed by just four goals at the break, but the Panthers (6-3, 1-0 GLIAC) defense held SVSU to one score in the second half to secure the win.

Three different Davenport players scored in the opening three minutes of the game to build a quick 3-0 lead.

Lainee Carmean (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores HS) put the Cardinals on the board with a goal at the 11:02 mark to trim the deficit to two scores.

Another score by DU preceded a score by Ally Schneider, putting the score at 4-2, Davenport. Schneider's goal was assisted by Gabby Parker (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / West Broward HS), her fifth of the season.

Abby Lee (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion HS) scored the final tally of the first quarter with 1:33 on the clock to put the score at 7-3 heading into the second frame.

Both teams traded goals twice in the second to keep the gap at four goals (9-5) in favor of the visitors. Briar-Rose Mackey (Saline, Mich. / Saline HS) scored with 8:14 remaining in the half to bring the margin back down to four points. Parker added a goal to her season total to finish the scoring for the first half at 3:28.

The final 30 minutes of play were controlled by the Panthers, who scored eight goals while allowing just one score from SVSU.

Mackey scored that lone goal of the half at the 5:59 mark of the third quarter. The tally was her second goal of the contest, and her 12th of the season (team leader in goals this season).

Annelle Dykema (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the team with six ground balls. Dorrie June (Indianapolis, Ind. / Southport HS) had three ground balls, while Schneider and Carmean finished with two. Schneider led the team with three draw controls, and Carmean was the team leader with one caused turnover. Mikaila Stone (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta HS) (L, 1-8) made 12 saves in net for the Cardinals.
