SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Saginaw Valley State University lacrosse team fell 22-2 to Dominican (Calif.) on Tuesday night. Briar-Rose Mackey (Saline, Mich. / Saline HS) scored both goals for the Cardinals (1-4) in the third quarter to put SVSU on the board in the game.
The Penguins (4-0) scored five goals in the first quarter and seven in the second to hold a 12-0 lead at the break. The Dominican defense was stout, allowing the Cardinals only three shots, two on goal, in the opening 30 minutes of play.
Two goals were scored by the Penguins in the third before Mackey scored a man-up goal at the 8:55 mark of the third frame. She added her second goal 59 seconds later off an assist from Sophia Ried (Midland, Mich. / Midland HS) for the final tally of the contest for SVSU.
Dominican added three more scored in the third and five in the final quarter to create the final score.
Lainee Carmean (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores HS) and Breanna Murmyluk (Oxford, Mich. / Central Michigan) led the team with two ground balls. Ally Schneider recorded a team-best two draw controls. Mackey's two goals were her sixth and seventh of the season. She and Schneider are currently tied for the team-lead in scoring with seven points.
