UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's lacrosse team fell 17-5 to Malone at home in the team's regular season opening contest on Saturday. The Cardinals (0-1) held a 3-2 lead at the five-minute mark of the opening quarter before the Pioneers (1-0) scored 13-straight goals to pull away.
Gabby Parker (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / West Broward HS) led the way for SVSU with her two scores in the first quarter. She finished with six shots, five on goal, and a caused turnover in the losing effort.
Parker scored the first two goals for the Cardinals, to hold a 2-1 lead at the 8:50 mark of the first quarter.
Malone knotted things up at 7:24 before Sarah Graziano (Swartz Creek, Mich. / Swartz Creek HS) netted her first goal of the season with an unassisted tally at the five-minute mark to move ahead 3-2.
The Pioneers scored in the final two minutes to knot things up at three going into the second quarter. Malone tallied seven goals in the second quarter to lead 10-3 at the break.
Three more goals were added by the Pioneers in the third quarter to put the score at 13-3.
Briar-Rose Mackey (Saline, Mich. / Alma College) registered her first goal as a Cardinal with a free position shot with 9:52 left in regulation. Abby Lee (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lake Orion HS) scored her first collegiate goal to end the scoring for the afternoon.
Ally Schneider recorded the lone assist for the Cardinals. She added two shots, one on goal, and a draw control. Dorrie June (Indianapolis, Ind. / Southport HS) led SVSU with four ground balls. Mya Nemecek (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton HS) had a team-high three caused turnovers. Mikaila Stone (Murrietta, Calif. / Murrieta HS) (L, 0-1) made 17 saves in net for the Cardinals. She also tied for the team-best four ground balls.
