GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Saginaw Valley State University women's golf played 54 holes over the weekend at Cherry Blossom Golf Course for the SVSU Spring Invitational. The Cardinals A team shot 932 (+68) over three rounds to finish first out of seven teams, while Marissa GeRue claimed the individual title. The first two rounds featured warmer and calmer weather before 40-plus mile per hour wind gusts appeared on Sunday.
GeRue broke the program's 18-hole and 54-hole records in the victory, shooting rounds of 78 (+6), 78 (+6), and 68 (-4) to finish the tournament at 224 (+8). She carded eight birdies in the final round and recorded the only eagle of the tournament, sinking her second shot on the par-four third hole. GeRue finished with nine birdies overall, five more than the four golfers tied for second.
Andie Martin followed with a tie for second place out of 38 golfers. Martin improved each round, shooting 79 (+7), 78 (+6), and 73 (+1) for a three-round total of 230 (+14).
Christina Nagy and Averie Pumford finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Nagy posted rounds of 83 (+11), 78 (+6), and 78 (+6) for a total of 239 (+23), while Pumford shot 76 (+4), 83 (+11), and 84 (+12) to finish at 243 (+27).
Alivia Ligrow rounded out the A team lineup, tying for 11th with a total of 249 (+33) after rounds of 86 (+14), 81 (+9), and 82 (+10).
The B team consisted of Aileen Cosentino, Anna McClure, Madison Webb, Mayson Southland, and Kaia Bruneel. Cosentino finished six strokes behind Ligrow after shooting 80 (+8), 83 (+11), and 92 (+20) for a total of 255 (+39).
McClure, Webb, and Southland all finished within six places of each other. McClure totaled 266 (+50) after rounds of 89 (+17), 94 (+22), and 83 (+11). Webb posted rounds of 88 (+16), 96 (+24), and 85 (+13) to finish at 269 (+53). Southland shot 96 (+24), 90 (+18), and 90 (+18) for a total of 276 (+60).
Bruneel rounded out the B team with a score of 299 (+83), shooting 95 (+23), 94 (+22), and 110 (+38) over the three rounds.
Martin led the field on par threes as the only golfer to shoot even on those holes. GeRue led the tournament on par fours with an average of 4.07 strokes per hole, finishing two over par, while Martin finished second in that category. GeRue also ranked second on par fives, averaging 5.25 strokes per hole to finish three over.
As a team, SVSU led the field on par threes and par fours and ranked second on par fives. The Cardinals recorded the most birdies (18), the second-most pars (149), the fewest bogeys (88), and the second-fewest double bogeys or worse (18).
