UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field teams wrapped up the GLIAC Indoor Championship meet on Sunday afternoon with two top-three team finishes. The Cardinal men placed second with 164 points, while the women scored 97 points to place third.
SVSU claimed two individual conference awards, with Natalie Formsma winning the GLIAC Women's Field Freshman of the Meet and Darryl Carter winning the Men's Track Freshman of the Meet.
Formsma won the women's pentathlon on day one of the meet after winning the 60m hurdles, long jump, and 800m run. She also finished third in the high jump and fourth in the shot put to claim the GLIAC title.
Carter won the men's 400m with a PR of 48.10 after recording the second-best time in the prelims on day one, improving his time by .33 seconds from that first race. He was a member of the GLIAC Champion men's distance medley relay team and the third-place men's 4x400 as well.
Andrew Quinn was a highlight for the men as he broke his own school record in the shot put with a toss of 18.40m to win the GLIAC Championship in the event. Noah Shaw and Kadyn Warner also scored points in the shot put, with Shaw's fourth-place mark of 15.30m and Warner's fifth-place 15.29m finish.
Zachary Harlan grabbed another GLIAC men's championship with his PR time of 6.88 seconds in the 60m finals. Trevor Culpepper was the runner-up, after trailing Harlan by just .01 second with a time of 6.89 seconds.
Grace Collett earned a GLIAC Championship in the 60m hurdles after she set a PR of 8.66 seconds to win the race. Marisa Johnson made the podium with Collett, as she finished third with a time of 8.85.
Dominic Suliman was the runner-up in the men's one mile after finishing with a time of 4:04.70. Bryce Husen was also a second-place finisher with his time of 1:53. 14 in the 800m run.
Three SVSU men scored points in the 3k, with Jack Lobodzinski reaching the podium in second place with his time of 8:01.40, a PR for him. Jacob Walker was sixth with a time of 8:18.26, and Adam Thomas finished right behind him in seventh with a time of 8:31.05.
Saginaw Valley State snagged two podium spots in the men's high jump as Sawyer Moloy was the runner-up and Xavier Santiago was third. All three podium athletes finished at 2.15m, with the finish order determined by a tiebreaker based on earlier heights.
Two Cardinal women made the podium in the pole vault. Madisyn Lundquist was second after she cleared 3.74m to set a new PR for her career. Sami Potts placed third after she also recorded a PR at 3.59m. Gracie Warner just missed the podium in fourth with her PR height of 3.44m.
Karissa Picard made it to the podium in the women's one mile after hitting a season-best time of 4:54.23 for third place. Tara Szuper earned a point for the Cardinals in the race after finishing eighth with a time of 5:00.89.
There was a five-way tie for third place in the women's high jump, with Kendall Wilcox earning one of those spots after clearing the bar at 1.59m.
Grace Harkenrider and Sydney Fontaine scored points for SVSU in the women's 800m run. Harkenrider tallied four points with her fifth-place finish of 2:14.20, a PR for her. Fontaine scored three points in sixth place with a time of 2:14.56.
Jenna Sweeney grabbed four points for the women's team in the 3k after she placed fifth with a time of 9:58.73. Bailey Schmoldt also scored a point in the race with a career-best time of 10:15.04 to place eighth.
Jayla Vautrin hit a PR in the triple jump with a mark of 10.77m to place fifth in the event.
Samuel Meriweather couldn't replicate his record-breaking time from the 200m prelims, but he did score points for the Cardinals after finishing in 21.86 seconds to earn sixth in the standings.
Janae Hudson scored two points for the women in the shot put after a best throw of 12.45m earned her seventh in the event.
The meet ended with the 4x400 relays, and both SVSU teams scored points to close the event. The women's team of Taylor Moyer, Madisyn Lundquist, Mallory Farmer, and Sydney Fontaine set a new season-best time of 3:55.69 to place fourth.
The men's team of Samuel Meriweather, Trevor Culpepper, Darryl Carter, and Marcellis Johnson earned third place with a diving effort across the finish line on the anchor leg that took the team to the podium with a season-best time of 3:16.24.
The Cardinals complete the GLIAC Championships with seven conference championships, two individual award winners, and two new school records.
