UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field claimed three GLIAC titles and had a school record broken on the first day of the GLIAC Indoor Championship meet on Saturday.
Natalie Formsma highlighted the day for the women with a win in the women's pentathlon. Formsma won the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.22, the long jump with a leap of 5.35m, and the 800m with a time of 2:34.49 to earn the conference title. She finished no worse than fourth place in the other two events on her way to the victory.
Jack Lobodzinski was crowned GLIAC champion in the men's 5k after crossing the finish line in 14:16.91. The Cardinals swept the podium in the event with Jacob Walker claiming second after a time of 14:22.96, and Adam Thomas finishing third at 14:25.20. Nick McArdle was fourth with a time of 14:29.56, and Isaac Tanis was seventh with a PR of 14:42.55.
The Cardinal men claimed another GLIAC title to conclude day one of the meet with a win in the Distance Medley Relay. The team of Corey Bowers, Darryl Carter, Bryce Husen, and Dominic Suliman tallied a time of 10:01.03 in the race to win the event.
The women's DMR team of Grace Harkenrider, Taylor Moyer, Sydney Fontaine, and Karissa Picard placed fourth with a season-best time of 11:54.27, which ranks 23rd in D2.
Jordan Paige hit the podium in the men's long jump after finishing third with a leap of 6.94m.
Samuel Meriweather set a new school record in the 200m with his prelim time of 21.66 seconds. That time was third and qualified him for the finals tomorrow.
Grace Collett set the fastest time in the women's 60m hurdle prelims with a finish of 8.67. That time was a PR for her and ranks 33rd in the nation. Marisa Johnson also qualified for the final race with a time of 8.86.
Trevor Culpepper and Zachary Harlan qualified for the men's 60m finals race on day two of the meet. Culpepper seeded first with his prelim time of 6.78 seconds. It is a season-best mark for him and the 40th-fastest time in NCAA Division II.
Darryl Carter placed second in the 400m prelims with a PR of 48.43 to move onto tomorrow's final. Marcellis Johnson was in the top 10 with a PR of 50.01 in the series of prelim races.
Carter Wolf sits in third through the first four events of the men's heptathlon. He won the shot put with a throw of 14.08m and recorded fifth in both the 60m (7.33 seconds) and the high jump (1.63m). He was seventh in the long jump with a best leap of 5.48m. The men's heptathlon concludes on day two with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m run.
Brin Ciglenecki fell just short of the podium in the men's pole vault after clearing the bar at 4.84m to place fourth. Wilson Tschirhart set a new PR with a clearance of 4.54m to place sixth, while Noah Thames was ninth at 4.39m.
Jenna Sweeney set a new PR in the women's 5k with a time of 17:14.47. Kinsie Jacques also had a PR, finishing in 17:28.12 for 10th. Alexis Tracy and Tara Szuper also set new PR times in the race, with Tracy finishing in 17:35.19 and Szuper in 17:45.64.
Noah Shaw also just missed the podium in the men's weight throw after achieving a toss of 17.96m in the event. Andrew Quinn fell to seventh with a toss of 17.85m, and Ryan Reynolds was eighth with a throw of 16.19m.
Timyah Meeks placed fourth on the women's side of the weight throw after she marked at 17.31m. Janae Hudson placed fifth in the event with a best throw of 16.61m.
Taylor Moyer set a new PR in the women's 400m with a time of 58.19. Moyer's time was good enough for 10th in the heats.
UP NEXT: The GLIAC Indoor Championships conclude tomorrow, Sunday, March 1, inside the SVSU Fieldhouse. The first event of the day is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. (ET).
