UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field teams began the 2025-26 indoor season by hosting the annual SVSU Holiday Open on Friday and Saturday.
The Cardinal men's team finished the meet with three NCAA qualifying marks, four event wins, and five personal best performances.
Dominic Suliman won the mile run with an NCAA-qualifying time of 4:07.15, ranking 1st in NCAA Division II. Corey Bowers finished second with a personal best of 4:09.42, ranking 2nd nationally after the opening weekend. Bryce Husen was fourth with a PR of 4:11.07, placing 4th in NCAA DII.
Jack Lobodzinski secured an NCAA D2 qualifying time with his 14:20.51 victory in the men's 5000m, ranking 4th in the country. Three other Cardinals finished in the top five: Nick McArdle was second with a PR of 14:23.38 (5th in NCAA), Adam Thomas third with a PB of 14:24.19 (6th in NCAA), and Jacob Walker fourth at 14:39.62 (9th in NCAA).
Andrew Quinn achieved a qualifying mark in the shot put, throwing 17.47m to win and place third in D2. He was also top 10 in the weight throw at 17.09m.
Xavier Santiago led the high jump with 2.09m, ranking fifth nationally. Sawyer Moloy took third at 2.04m, ninth in D2.
The men's 4x400m relay team, consisting of Sam Meriweather, Carter, Nate Niederquell, and Marcellis Johnson, placed third with a 6th-best time of 3:20.48.
Zachary Harlan and Nolan Rhodes debuted for SVSU with top-five finishes. Harlan ran 6.93 in the 60m dash prelims (fourth) and 6.97 in the finals (fifth). Rhodes finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 4.35m. Noah Thomas was 10th, clearing 4.20m.
Darryl Cater debuted for the Cardinals by finishing fifth in the men's 400m at 49.19, currently fourth in D2.
Carter Wolf recorded two top-five finishes during the men's heptathlon. He won the shot put with a toss of 13.76m and was second in the 1000m with a time of 2:52.05 to finish 13th overall with 3843 points.
On the women's side, SVSU won the 5000m as Jenna Sweeney claimed victory with a PR of 17:40.03. Seven Cardinals, including Sweeney, finished in the top 10. Alexis Tracy was second (17:45.17, PR), Karissa Picard third (17:45.22), Tara Szuper fifth (17:55.75, PR), Kinsie Jacques sixth (18:06.59, PR), Bailey Schmoldt seventh (18:09.46), and Grace Harkenrider ninth (18:22.80, PR).
Emelia MacDonald placed second in the women's 3000m with a PR of 10:41.03, while Evelyn O'Connor finished third at 10:43.00.
Grace Collett finished as runner-up in the 60m hurdles with an 8.88, while her qualifying 8.86 ranks ninth nationally. Marisa Johnson matched the 8.86 in prelims and ran 9.00 in the final to place fifth.
Madisyn Lundquist was SVSU's final top-three finisher, clearing 3.57m to place third in the pole vault. Sami Potts debuted in eighth after clearing 3.27m.
Timyah Meeks was the lone SVSU women's athlete with an NCAA qualifying mark, finishing fourth in the weight throw at 17.45m, ranking 10th in D2.
Natalie Formsma finished the meet ranked eighth in the pentathlon after scoring 3187 points. She registered three top-five finishes across the five events, including third place in the 60m hurdles and the long jump. Ava Gary finished sixth in the pentathlon after a final score of 3056. She was in the top 10 in all five events to earn that placement. Abby Kissling was the final SVSU competitor in the pentathlon, placing 10th with 2885 points. She was in the top 10 in four of the five events.
