Hieber Wins 1650-Yard Freestyle on Final Day of GLIAC Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program capped off the GLIAC Championships on Monday at the Holland Aquatic Center. They were led by junior Lexi Hieber who won the 1650-yard freestyle, claiming a GLIAC Championship.

Hieber finished the mile with a time of 17.01.11, smashing her own program record from last year. It's the third individual record she broke over the weekend and fifth overall as she was a member of the 400-yard free relay and 800-yard free relay teams that set records. The 400-yard free relay team of Ella DesJean, Carolina Bononi Heinz, Andrea Bustos, and Hieber etched their names into the SVSU record book today as well. In total, the Cardinals set eight program records at the GLIAC Championships.

There were two other Division II B cut times for Saginaw Valley on Monday as Álmos Szedlák and Alp Hacioglu had stand-out performances. Szedlák finished in 16th place in the 100-yard freestyle preliminary with a time of 45.02, hitting the DII B cut standard mark. Hacioglu hit the DII B cut mark twice in the 200-yard breaststroke. He finished first (2:00.32) in the preliminary and took fourth (2:00.68) in the finals.

Both teams had sat in fifth place for the entire four-day period, but the women's program hopped Davenport and took fourth overall on the final day. The women's team finished with 433 points and the men had 412.
