HOLLAND, Mich . – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program had another record setting day at the Holland Aquatic Center. Day three of the GLIAC Championships was highlighted by two program records for SVSU as Lexi Hieber set her second in as many days and Alvaro Rodriguez beat his own record from 2024.
There were 12 Division II B cut standard times for the Cardinals with six swimmers achieving the feat in both the preliminary and final rounds of their event. All six swimmers improved their time in the finals as well. Hieber and Ella DesJean hit their marks in the 500-yard freestyle. Hieber placed third (4:58.23) in the prelims and second (4:45.33) in the finals as both times broke the record of 4:59.63 set by Alexandra Davis back in 2019. DesJean finished seventh (5:03.04) and fifth (5:01.56) in the event.
Rodriguez had the final DII B cut time of the day for SVSU in the 200-yard butterfly. He finished third in both the preliminaries (1:49.55) and finals (1:46.67) with his finals time beating his previous record mark of 1:46.81 by 0.14 seconds.
Rodriguez was joined in the DII B cut party by William Hsiao, Hadyn Gould, and Alp Hacioglu. Hsiao finished 10th in the 500-yard freestyle preliminary (4:32.74) before jumping up a spot in the finals (4:29.99). Gould hit his marks in the 100-yard backstroke with a sixth place finish (48.34) and a 0.02 second improvement in his seventh place finish at the finals (48.32). Hacioglu rounded out the top performances with fourth place finishes in both the preliminary (54.77) and final (54.36) of the 100-yard breaststroke.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving sits in fifth place still for both the men's and women's teams. They finish the GLIAC Championships on Monday, February 9. The preliminaries start at 10:00 AM and the finals are at 5:30 PM at the Holland Aquatic Center.
