HOLLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program was back in action on Saturday for day two of four at the GLIAC Championships. Both teams were in fifth place entering the day and stayed in that position after the second day of competition. The women finished the day with 188 points and the men have 208 points. The Cardinals also posted 12 Division II B cut standard times on Saturday with Lexi Hieber, Carolina Bononi Heinz, Alvaro Rodriguez, Hadyn Gould, and Isaac deVries posting DII B cut times in both the preliminaries and the finals.
Hieber and Bononi Heinz were joined by Ella DesJean as the three women that recorded DII B cut times, all in the 200-yard freestyle. Hieber hit the NCAA DII Championships qualifying mark in both the prelims and finals, finishing second in the morning (1:51.63) and third in the evening (1:50.71). Bononi Heinz followed suit taking third in the prelims (1:51.95) and fifth in the finals (1:52.62). DesJean hit the mark in the finals as well, finishing sixth (1:52.65).
Samantha Fowler qualified in the prelims for the finals of the 400-yard individual medley, placing 11th (4:34.89). She improved by over six seconds to hit the DII B cut mark placing ninth in the finals (4:28.50).
Rodriguez and Gould hit their marks in the 100-yard butterfly as Rodriguez took seventh in the morning (48.72) and Gould was 10th (48.29). They both improved their time in the finals as Rodriguez stayed at seventh but was half a second faster (47.83) and Gould moved up a spot to ninth (47.82). deVries joined the women with success in the 200-yard freestyle as he was fifth in the prelims (1:38.69) and eighth in the finals (1:39.22).
Up Next: Saginaw Valley is halfway through the GLIAC Championships. They are back in action at the Holland Aquatic Center on Sunday, February 8. The times stay the same throughout each day with the prelims starting at 10:00 AM and the finals at 5:30 PM.
