Cardinals Sweep Lake Superior State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program returned to the pool Friday evening, sweeping Lake Superior State at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center.

The SVSU women picked up a 170–18 victory, while the Cardinals' men secured a 188–30 win, sweeping the meet behind strong performances across swimming and diving events.

On the women's side, SVSU controlled the meet from the start, taking first place in every event. Lexi Hieber highlighted the day with a win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.98), while Anastasiia Krasilnikova captured the 100-yard freestyle (55.61). Lucy Stevens added a victory in the 50-yard freestyle (25.70), and Kaylene Darbee finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.98). Liv Czata earned a win in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:21.82), while Roni Markwood took the 200-yard free (2:03.68). Layla Winklepleck won both diving events including the 1-meter (239.25) and 3-meter (266.60) events.

The men were just as dominant, winning all events on the afternoon. Rory Kauffman led the diving group with a sweep of his own, scoring 297.45 on the 1-meter and 312.10 on the 3-meter. In the pool, Lyon Hall picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.67), Brendan Marshall captured the 100-yard freestyle (48.63), and Álmos Szedlák paced the Cardinals in the 400-yard individual medley (4:15.44). SVSU continued to build separation throughout the meet with consistent top finishes across all strokes and distances.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley hosts their final home meet tomorrow, January 10, welcoming Ashland, Hillsdale, and Lake Superior State for a quad-meet. It is also Senior Day with the festivities taking place before the start of the meet at 1:00 PM.
