UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving team hosted the University of Findlay on Saturday at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center. The Cardinals took home two wins as the women's team defeated the No. 14 Oilers 112-111, and the men won 120-111 over No. 20 Findlay.
Rory Kauffman led the men with a massive performance, breaking the program and pool record in both the 1-meter (334.50) and 3-meter (331.05) dives. The men's team had three more wins with Adam Bebars, William Hsiao, and Alp Hacioglu. Bebars took home a win in the 100-yard freestyle (45.74), Hsiao won the 500-yard freestyle (4:35.71), and Hacioglu won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.30).
The women's team was led by Lexi Hieber, who dominated the 1650-yard freestyle (17:24.48) finishing 14 seconds ahead of the field. Hieber also took home first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.40). Hannah Martin Cook won the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.91) and Samantha Fowler was the fastest in the 400-yard individual medley (4:26.88).
The Cardinal teams had 11 second place finishes as well. Head coach Jason Lintjer had this to say after the meet,
"It was a full-team victory today. We had to dig deep against a great team. We we're pretty tired from yesterday, but we kept fighting. Two major upset victories for the women this weekend. I'm so proud of this team."
Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving heads to Valparaiso, Indiana next weekend. The Cardinals compete against Valparaiso on Saturday, November 1. The meet starts at 2:00 PM at the Valparaiso Aquatic Center.
