Swim & Dive Splits Tri-Meet as Women’s Team Upsets Findlay

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program hosted Northern Michigan and Findlay on Friday at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center. The 17th ranked women's team defeated No. 14 Findlay 115-108 and fell to No. 10 Northern Michigan 132-108. The 10th ranked men's program took down No. 20 Findlay 138-99 and fell in a close battle against No. 8 Northern Michigan 125-118.

The women were highlighted by a record-setting time for Carolina Bononi Heinz. She set the program record in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:50.73). The Cardinals also collected several first-place finishes. Lexi Hieber (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western HS) continued her strong season with wins in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:14.06) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.36), narrowly breaking the 500-yard freestyle record from 2019 (4:59.63). Samantha Fowler (Wellington, New Zealand / St. Hildas School) added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley (2:07.53) and helped SVSU to a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:32.51) along with Hieber, Anastasiia Krasilnikova and Roni Markwood (New Baltimore, Mich. / Anchor Bay HS).

On the men's side, William Hsiao highlighted the distance events with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:18.13) and a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.64). Nathan Walker took first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.69). Adam Bebars (Abudhabi, United Arab Emirates) captured the 100-yard freestyle in 45.18 seconds, edging the competition by two-tenths of a second.

In diving, Rory Kauffman (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt HS) swept both the 1-meter (274.45) and 3-meter (281.25) boards.

The Cardinals also saw strong relay performances, including the men's 400 freestyle relay of Bebars, Walker, Florian Quappill, and Lyon Hall (McFarland, Wis.), which placed third with a time of 3:01.62.
