2016 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships Overview

Below is a summary of how our men's and women's swimming & diving programs fared at the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships. The women's program currently wrapped up its second season and the men just their first. Things are looking up for these two programs, both of which are very young and are ever-improving!

Overall, the men finished 29th and the women tied for 37th in the national championships.

Four Cardinals earned Honorable Mention All-American in four different events at the 2016 NCAA Championships last week. hosted by Indiana University.

Wilhelmina Francisco - 3 meter diving
Max Buxton - 1 meter diving
Amanda Thielen - 100 back
Shaun Yap - 200 breast

Wilhelmina Francisco set a new program record in the 3 meter diving event and took 15th with 426.65 points. She scored the first ever points in the women's program history at the NCAA Championships.

Max Buxton posted a 12th place finish in the 1 meter diving event, putting SVSU on the board at the NCAA Championships in the first year of the men's program. His score of 434.95 points is a new program record.

Amanda Thielen placed 15th in the 100 yard backstroke in the consolation heat finals with a time of 56.91. She is the first SVSU women swimmer to compete in a NCAA Championship swimming finals and the first swimmer to earn Honorable Mention All-American.

Shaun Yap finished 13th in the 200 breaststroke last night with a personal best and program record 1:59.58. Earned Honorable Mention All-American and became the first men's swimmer in program history to score points in an individual swimming event at the NCAA Championships.

Rebeca Martinez took 27th in the 200 yard IM prelims with a time of 2:07.43. Martinez also finished 22nd in the 400 yard IM prelims with a time of 4:30.64 and in the 200 yard backstroke, posting a time of 2:04.67.
