UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team took home both GLIAC Player of the Week awards for the second week in a row after defeating Purdue Northwest 3-1 and Roosevelt 4-1. The Cardinals remain undefeated on the year (5-0-3, 4-0-0 GLIAC) and have taken first place in the conference standings.
Matty Telfer (Newcastle, England / Sunderland College) earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. The sophomore forward led the Cardinal offense in 3-1 and 4-1 wins over Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt. Telfer scored three goals, one against the Pride and two against the Lakers, while totaling seven shots and all three on goal went in. He now leads the team with five goals and 11 points as he is tied for second in goals and is third in points in the GLIAC.
Logan Kunnen (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian HS) earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. The redshirt-senior defender led the defense, holding PNW to less than half of their average shots per game and RU to 60% of their average shots per game. SVSU outshot their opponents 37-13 and allowed seven shots on goal. Kunnen and the Cardinal's defensive pressure allowed SVSU to maintain possession for more than half each game, with 50-60% of their pressure being in the attacking end zone. Kunnen also assisted Telfer's last goal in the 54th minute against Roosevelt.
These are the first GLIAC Player of the Week awards for Telfer and Kunnen's careers and are the fourth and fifth for men's soccer this season. SVSU heads on the road this week to play at Northern Michigan on Friday at 12:00 PM and at Parkside on Sunday at 1:30 PM.
