UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team swept the GLIAC Player of the Week honors after posting back-to-back shutout victories over Davenport (2-0) and St. Cloud State (3-0). The Cardinals are riding a three-game win streak, outscoring their opponents 10-0 during that stretch.
Taro Aboubakary (Yokohama, Japan / Seiwa Gakuen HS) earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. The redshirt-freshman midfielder made his Cardinal debut this week and immediately made an impact, assisting on two goals in each match. Aboubakary recorded four primary assists in total, including both game-winners, and added two shots (one on goal) against St. Cloud State.
Liam Zimmerman (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston HS) was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. The senior defender anchored a back line that allowed just eight total shot attempts across two clean sheets. In the first half against Davenport, the Panthers failed to record a single attempt. Zimmerman also contributed offensively, scoring two goals against St. Cloud State while helping SVSU outshoot its opponents 42-8 over the two matches.
These honors mark the first GLIAC Player of the Week awards in the careers of both Aboubakary and Zimmerman, and the second and third for the Cardinals this season. SVSU returns home this week to host Purdue Northwest on Friday and Roosevelt on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Robert C. Braddock Field.
