Cardinals Take Down No. 13 St. Cloud State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program hosted No. 13 St. Cloud State Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (5-4-0, 2-3-0 GLIAC) shutout the Huskies (7-3-0, 5-1-0 GLIAC) 3-0 handing SCSU their first conference loss. SVSU snapped their three-losing streak and ended the Huskies' seven-game winning streak at the same time.

The Cardinals dominated, especially in the first half, as they led in shot 14-5 and shots on goal 8-1. In the first half, SVSU had 11 shots and five on goal as Jayden Cameron had two high-percentage opportunities early on. SCSU goalkeeper Ramy Atia stopped a breakaway against Cameron in the first 10 minutes of the match.

The pressure continued and eventually SVSU's offense was too much for the Huskies. Jonny Monney notched his fourth of the year in the 17th minute as Elliot Nottoli received a cross from Cameron and put a shot on net. It was deflected by the leg of Monney past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. In the 39th minute, Sheikh Manneh doubled the lead with his second of the year. Matty Telfer centered a pass in the box for Anthony Waller. Waller struck the ball out of the air and his shot deflected off the keeper and was bouncing towards the goal when Manneh tapped it home to make it 2-0.

St. Cloud State had early chances out of the halftime break as a free kick by the GLIAC's leading scorer, Philip Caputo, from just outside of the penalty area was blocked and the Cardinals fouled Caputo in the penalty area on the ensuing play. He took the penalty kick trying to cut the SVSU lead in half. Caputo's shot in the middle of the net was deflected away by the Cardinal goalkeeper Nick Kay's left leg and cleared by the defense. It was Kay's first and only shot he faced in his third shutout of the season.

Using that momentum, SVSU scored in the 66th minute to make it 3-0. Alex Demorow crossed the ball into the box after receiving it from a corner kick. His cross was headed on goal by Monney which was saved by Atia. Cameron corralled the rebound and deposited it in the bottom right corner for his third of the year.

SVSU men's soccer improves to 3-1-0 against ranked opponents this year adding to their wins against Gannon and Tiffin earlier in the season.
