PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State Unviersity men's soccer team opened up league play on Friday (Sept. 13) with a 3-0 victory over the Lake Erie College Storm.
Saginaw Valley netted its first goal of the match when Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) beat a Storm defender and found the back of the net just 10:27 into the contest.
The Cardinals then would deal with a bit of adversity, as a questionable red card on Zack Cooney would leave SVSU one starter short.
SVSU would respond, however, with a pair of goals in the second period by Conor Reaume (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) at the 66:20 marker and Jordan Kalk (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) 76:07 into the contest to hold a 3-0 lead.
That's where the score would stand, as the Cards closed-out for the shutout.
"Today was an overall great performance," stated Head Coach Cale Wassermann. "This was a special way to bounce back from last weekend and open our GLIAC play with a shutout. The team dealt with a bit of adversity in the game like professionals and I am very proud of their effort and happy we got the clean sheet."
The Cardinals are back in action again on Sunday (Sept. 15), as they take-on Marygrove College in the team's 2013 home opener. The match is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
"We have a tough game Sunday against Marygrove," said Wassermann. "Marygrove is on a hot streak, but we are happy to finally be playing in front of our home crowd on our field."
