Cardinals in Fifth After Day One of GLIAC Championships

AUGUSTA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf program opened the GLIAC Championships on Thursday, April 16 with 36 holes at Stoatin Brae Golf Course. The Cardinals sit fifth out of nine teams after two rounds with a total of 574 (+6), posting rounds of 288 (+4) and 286 (+2).

Evan Klein leads the Cardinals and is tied for eighth place out of 45 golfers. He carded rounds of 71 (E) and 70 (-1), totaling 141 (-1) with a team-high seven birdies on the day.

Tony Spicuzza sits two strokes back and is tied for 14th after rounds of 70 (-1) and 73 (+2) for a total of 143 (+1). His opening-round 70 matched Klein for the low round of the day for SVSU.

Dominik Dostal, Garrett Morrison, and Ben Yono round out the lineup, all within three strokes of each other. Dostal is tied for 24th after rounds of 74 (+3) and 71 (E) for a total of 145 (+3). Morrison is one stroke back, tied for 27th with back-to-back rounds of 73 (+2) for a total of 146 (+4). Yono is tied for 29th at 148 (+6) after rounds of 76 (+5) and 72 (+1).

As a team, SVSU ranks fourth in birdies with 27 and third in pars with 117. Dostal is tied for the fourth-best performance on par threes, averaging 2.90 strokes per hole to finish one under. Klein leads the field on par fours, playing them at four under with an average of 3.78 strokes per hole.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley returns to Stoatin Brae Golf Course on Friday, April 17 for the third round of the GLIAC Championships. Following round three, the top two teams will advance to a match play final to determine the conference champion. The Cardinals sit nine strokes behind second-place Davenport and trail Ferris State (+4) and Wayne State (+5) in the standings.
