WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. – Saginaw Valley State University men's golf started their spring season with a second-place finish in the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff hosted by Walsh. The Cardinals shot 53 over through three rounds at the Saddlebrook Golf Resort and took second out of six teams.
Garrett Morrison (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing HS) led the team as he tied for second out of 36 golfers. He shot 73 (+2), 73 (+2), and 76 (+5) to finish with a 222 (+9). Tony Spicuzza (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville HS) and Jorge Basterra both had top-ten finishes as well with Spicuzza shooting 78 (+7), 69 (-2), and 79 (+8) for a total of 226 (+13) and Basterra shooting 79 (+8), 74 (+3) and 78 (+7) for a three-round total of 231 (+18).
Spicuzza had the lowest scoring round with the 69 (-2) and Basterra carded the lone eagle for SVSU, shooting a three on the par-five hole 14 in his first round. He was one of five in the tournament to card an eagle.
Dominik Dostal (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills HS) followed up with rounds of 84 (+13), 78 (+7), and 76 (+5) for a three-round total of 238 (+25). Evan Klein (Guelph, Ontario / Bishop Macdonell HS) and Ben Yono (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice HS) rounded out the team as both shot 27 over. Klein shot 85 (+14), 74 (+3), and 81 (+10) while Yono shot two 76's (+5) and 88 (+17) in his final round.
Morrison and Spicuzza led the tournament with 10 birdies each. Klein tied for second in pars with 33. The team was second best on par fours, averaging 4.45 strokes per hole and were the best on par fives, shooting 10 under overall and averaging 4.81 strokes per hole.
