GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf team sits in a tie for seventh place after the opening round of the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Championships.  This year's event is being held at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Kentucky.

The Cardinals shot an opening round 295 (+7) on the par-72, 6,842 yard layout and sit a single stroke behind sixth place Wayne State.  Grand Valley State leads after the first round (283), as it joined Malone (284) and Walsh (286) as the three schools to shoot under par for the day.

Senior Micah Skidmore bounced-back from early consecutive bogeys and birdied the ninth hole to make the turn at +1 with a 37.  He filled the back nine scorecard with eight pars and a birdie on the par-5 14th to finish with an even-par 72 to lead the Cards.  Skidmore sits in a tie for 16th place overall.

Junior Ryan Thomas carded a 73 (+1) for SVSU, as he began his round with eight consecutive pars and birdied the ninth hole to turn at one-under (35).  Thomas bogeyed a couple of holes on the final nine holes and finished with the 73 mark and tied for 24th.

Senior Carter Marsh posted a 74 in the round after shooting 37-37 in a round that featured a team-best three birdies on the day.  He is currently tied for 29th in the event.

Senior Wyatt Drost and redshirt freshman Ryan Peruski each shot rounds of 76, which rounded-out the scoring for Saginaw Valley and put both players tied for 46th overall.

"We didn't take advantage of the course today," said SVSU Head Coach Joe Vogl.  "The weather cooperated enough to make scoring fairly easy and we failed to capitalize on that.  But most really good players know that it's tough to string three great rounds together.  After our so-so round today, we are still right in the thick of things and only have to worry about stringing two of those great rounds together!"

Saginaw Valley returns to the course on Saturday morning looking to gain ground as the Cards tee-off at 9:20 am on Saturday.
