BAY CITY, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s golf team sits in third place after 36 holes of play at the first-ever Al Watrous Memorial Intercollegiate Invitational at the Bay City Country Club. SVSU is playing host to this season-opening tournament, which is being played in dedication to Mr. Al Watrous (1899-1983), who was a very accomplished PGA Professional and mentor to former Cardinal golfer Steve Brady.

John Lange led the Cardinals’ A-squad on day one of competition, firing rounds of 65-70, good enough for a nine-under-par finish for the first 36 holes. Dieter Schulz shot twin 72’s for an even par finish while Brian King and Nate Kelly rounded-out the scoring for SVSU with totals of +5 (75-74) and +6 (77-73), respectively.

Saginaw Valley’s second team sits in seventh-place overall, and was led by Dustin Vogl, who fired a one-over-par 145 (72-73). Troy Quenneville +2 (77-69) is close behind while Addison Monfils and Rob Ronk rounded-out the scoring with rounds of +7 (76-75) and +9 (77-76).

Ferris State University leads the event with a team total of 560. Grand Valley State University sits two strokes behind in second place, with SVSU in third position, 15 strokes behind Ferris. Play will resume tomorrow with the final round, which will be a 9:00 am shotgun start.
