GEORGETOWN, KY. – The SVSU golf team
traveled to Kentucky (April 4-5) to compete in the Jewell, a two
round tournament featuring 20 teams, the largest the Cardinals have
competed in so far this spring. Although the golfers put up there
best scores of the season, none of the Cardinals shot over 79 for a
round, they were unable to do enough to finish in the top ten and
came home with a score of 596, 20 strokes over par, and a twelfth
place finish. Ferris State finished in first with an 11 under par
565, good enough to separate them by only two strokes from both
Grand Valley and the University of Indianapolis, who both shot 567
and tied for second. Fourth place went to Wayne State University
who shot an even par 576.
The Cardinals shot their best round of the season on Saturday,
finishing with a 6 over par 294, tying them for tenth with Ashland.
Senior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.) continued to shoot well
and lead the Cardinals, finishing the day with a 71, one stroke
under par.
Hocquard’s score on Saturday was the best the Cardinals had
put up so far this spring. The Leader for the day was Steve Cuzzort
of Wayne State who shot a 66, 6 strokes under par.
Saginaw saw a drop in their scores on Sunday as the overall team
score fell 8 strokes to 302, 14 over par. Hocquard again led the
Cardinals and shot 71. Ferris State’s Kurt Valley led the day
and the weekend with a score of 65 on Sunday and a total score of
133, 11 strokes under par.
Hocquard’s score of 142, two strokes under par, made him the
leader for the Cardinals and tied him for 11th in the tournament.
Junior Rob Ronk (Clarkston, Mich.) was the team’s second best
golfer and tied for 58th with a seven over 151. Junior Brian King
(Livonia, Mich.) and sophomore Nate Kelly (Suttons Bay, Mich.) both
shot 153, nine over par, and tied for 69th. Junior Dieter Schulz
(Port Huron, Mich.) tied for 81st with a score of 155, 11 strokes
over par.
The Cardinal Golf team will be in action again this weekend, April
10-11, at the Northwood Invitational in Midland, Mich.
